Tips for Men's Skin Care and What to AvoidMost men are coming around to the fact that they might need to put a little moisture back into their skin and also take steps to cleaning their pores on a regular basis.  It only takes a few extra minutes a day, but the results will be noticeable.  Having healthier looking skin will lead to a more youthful looking appearance and will reduce irritation and other problems men run into if shaving on a regular basis.  Besides, isn’t it time that men let go of all those limiting beliefs that a good moisturizer is just for women?  If you are struggling with the grooming process then we recommend reading our men’s personal grooming guide to figure out the process and also give you a list of the tools that you will need for the job.

Some of the main items we will be focusing on for men’s face care are face cleansers, shaving cream, aftershave lotion, moisturizer, and sunscreen.  There are other products on the market like clay masks, but if you are just starting out then let’s keep it simple.  A man’s face takes more abuse than a woman’s from shaving and other activities.  Also a man’s pores are larger and we are prone to getting blackheads more easily.  Taking care of your face will make your skin more pleasant to touch and reduce razor burn.  Let’s take a look at some products and steps that you can take to help change things around for your skin.

Skincare Products That Every Man Should Consider

You can find all of the items on the list for a relatively low price and adding just one of these to the mix will improve your skin quality.  We will review some of the ingredients to look for in quality men’s products and pretty much everything that we have tried from Jack Black is outstanding.  Here are some items to look for:

Neutrogena Men Invigorating Face Wash, 5.1 OunceFace Cleansers:  Washing your face twice a day is enough to clean that skin of yours and make sure your pores remain free of junk.  When looking for a face cleanser we recommend that you pick up a cleanser with alpha hydroxyl acid and is free of paraben and sulfates.  You want to make sure that you steer clear of using that bar of soap that will leave your skin dry.

Looking at facial cleansers I would recommend looking for a cleanser that is pH-balanced.  Another thing to keep in mind is getting a cleanser that has no fragrance or something very light.  If you are on a budget I would recommend Neutrogena Men’s invigorating face wash which has a very subtle scent and leaves my face feeling clean every time.

If budget is no issue I would recommend picking up Jack Black pure clean daily facial cleanser.  Included with the Jack Black cleanser is a cleanser and toner that gets all the deep-down dirt and oil.  Jack Black uses oat and coconut-derived surfactants which cleanse your skin and the witch hazel acts as an astringent and antioxidant.  I would recommend following up with a nice moisturizer.

Proraso Shaving Soap, Eucalyptus & Menthol, 5.2 oz (150 ml), New FormulationShaving Creams:  You will want to look for a product here that is lubricating that will allow the razor to glide over the skin which will prevent razor burn.  There are many shaving soaps on the market that include eucalyptus and menthol.  Also, you will find aerosol cans of shaving cream or gel that will give you a nice shave.

The Art of Shaving has created one of the best shaving creams on the market which are worth every penny.  This shaving cream is unscented and hypoallergenic which is a plus.  You won’t be suffering from razor burn and you will be left with a moisturized face.  The Art of Shaving Cream is rich with glycerin and coconut oil.

If you are after the perfect shaving soap then I have to recommend Proraso shaving soap.  Made in Italy, this shaving soap includes eucalyptus and menthol.  Make sure you pick up a shaving brush to like the Escali Pure Badger brush that will help you get the perfect lather.

Clubman Pinaud After Shave Lotion, 6 OunceAftershave Lotion:  Most men will skip the step of aftershave lotion, but adding this to your routine will help soothe that upset skin.  Another benefit of using a good after shave is it includes an antiseptic in most cases which will reduce infection.

I am sure that you have felt the tingling sensation after a good shave and there is good reason to use an aftershave lotion or balm.  When you shave, your skin will be vulnerable because when you shave it removes the top layer of skin cells.  If nothing is done then you will experience dry skin and may develop ingrown hairs.

Some of my favorite picks for an aftershave lotion are the Proraso aftershave lotion which is a great anti-irritant for sensitive skin.  The Proraso aftershave lotion contains no parabens, silicons, mineral oils, or artificial colors.    Another fantastic after shave lotion is the Clubman Pinaud brand.  The Clubman Pinaud lotion has a nice masculine fragrance to it and soothes tender skin.  This shave lotion will help heal any razor nicks you may receive and is a fantastic price.

Neutrogena Men Age Fighter Face Moisturizer, 1.4 OunceSunscreens:  Using a sunscreen is one of the best ways to reduce aging and if you are going outdoors it would be a great idea to apply some to the skin that will be in direct sunlight.  Some moisturizers include sunscreen so you get a double bonus.  Make sure the sunscreen is at least 15 SPF.

One of my favorite products that moisturize and has a broad-spectrum sunscreen is the Jack Black double duty with an SPF 20.  Not only will this improve your skin’s overall appearance, but also hydrates your skin without that nasty greasy feeling other lotions can leave you with.  My second pick would be Neutrogena men’s age fighter face moisturizer which includes an SPF 15 sunscreen.

Moisturizer:  As you age, your skin tends to dry out as your essential oils dwindle over time.  It is important to replenish the skin by applying a good moisturizer.  What you want to look for in a good moisturizer are vitamins like A, C, and E which will protect skin cells and antioxidants that help with aging.  You want to stay away from moisturizers that contain sodium lauryl sulfate which can cause the opposite effect or remove natural oils.

What to Look for in Men’s Skincare Products

There are so many different ingredients and chemicals on the market that you might have an apprehension of what to buy and stay away from.  I have broken down the ingredients that will help you make an informed decision about your next purchase.

Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer SPF 20Alpha Hydroxy Acids:  You will also see these referred to as AHAs on the back of the label and help clear away dead skin cells that are on your body.  This will smooth your skin and AHAs are naturally occurring in a lot of fruits.  You have to remember that AHAs are a mild acid and will work best used over time instead of once in awhile.

Alcohols:  There are so many different types of alcohols in products for your skin.  What you want to avoid is ethyl alcohol which will scour skin and do more damage than harm if used in larger amounts.  Alcohols that are milder or know as “fatty” alcohols will help strengthen and moisturize your skin.  Lanolin is a perfect example of a more mild alcohol.

Antioxidants:  Collagen is what keeps your skin looking youthful and fresh.  As you age the collagen starts to break down and you get more wrinkles.  Some of the things that break down collagen are “free radicals” that are created from UV light and man-made pollution.  Where antioxidants come in are to neutralize the free radicals and help your skin stay protected.

You can find antioxidants in many foods and other natural and synthetic products on the market.  Sometimes it is hard to read the product’s label because of the size of the product.  The manufacturer’s website would be the best source to find information about the contents of the product.

Final Thoughts on Men’s Skincare Products

Usually, men’s skincare products go a long way and will last you for a long time.  Looking at a price point, what is it worth to you to keep healthy skin that is protected from “free radicals” and UV rays that could cause serious damage if left unnoticed?  Some products are more expensive than others and my only advice would be to check the label to see if you get some of the key ingredients that will help your skin stay healthy and young in appearance.  If you have any products that you stand by, please leave a comment in the section below to let us know what is working for you.
